Chapter 12

“No, stay back. Get away from me!” Sillavana scooted back as the assassin approached her.

He stopped his advance, considering her for a moment. “We have no time for this. You must come with me immediately.”

“They knew your name. You’re one of them!”

He closed the distance between them with such speed, she didn’t have time to flinch. Gray eyes peeked through a curtain of shaggy red hair as he knelt before her. She braced, fully expecting to be grabbed or lifted. But he didn’t lay a hand on her.

“I was,” he admitted. Soft spoken, that youthful voice did not belong to this ruthless assassin. “But that was long ago.”

Her back to a wall, Sillavana’s heart raced as she turned away. “Why did you help me?” she whispered.

“Somehow you have managed to evade the Servants,” he said, ignoring her question. “The Brotherhood is not accustomed to failure. Until now, they did not take you seriously. All that has changed... We have to go.”

“You stay away from her.” Jemaex stepped out from behind a cart. “Back away or I’ll...” His voice cracked and his hands trembled as he clutched a dagger.

Merely glancing from the corner of his eye, Renwin turned slightly and flicked his wrist. Jemaex yelped when the thrown dagger knocked the blade from his hand. With such pinpoint precision, it could have just as easily been his eye.

“Go play hero somewhere else, boy.” Ignoring him from that point on, he shifted his attention back to Sillavana. “We have no time for these charades.” He rose off his knee and offered his hand. “They will send more, and more after that. We must go...now.”

Sillavana’s mind raced as the reality of the situation sank in. Not only did she not trust this man, she truly hated him. The Brotherhood had taken everything from her, and he had been a part of that. Still, she would be dead had he not showed up when he did. Whatever his reason for saving her, he hadn’t done it just to leave her here. She would either go with him voluntarily, or be taken by force. Of that much she was certain.

She took the offered hand and rose to her feet.

Speechless, Jemaex watched her take the saddlebags off her dead horse and reattach them to his. She wasn’t seriously going to leave with this man, was she? Fresh bodies lay in the streets, a not-so-subtle reminder of just how dangerous he was.

“Jemaex.” Clutching his cut hand, he hung his head as she approached him. “I’m sorry for everything. I know you wish our paths had never crossed, so this is the first step in making that wish come true. Our time together has come to an end, and I hope this makes us even.”

“You don’t have to go with him.” Mercifully, the rain helped hid his welling tears.

“Yes. I do.” Doors creaked open a crack as faces appeared in windows. “He’s right, you know. If I stay behind, they will just find me again. And then what?” She put her hand on his shoulder.
